![SPOOK HILL :: SEPTEMBER MIXTAPE :: BOY ATTRACTIONS
Walker and I have had this one in the works for a while. We decided a month or so ago (after our last mixtape) that we wanted to try something a bit different from our usual mixes. We settled on the idea of compiling our favorite songs recorded before 2000 that were relatively unknown or obscure (or at least if the artist was relatively known, one of their hidden gems). That was really the only restriction.
Interestingly enough, there was a clear divide in the years from which we took our songs, which you’ll see during the track list. Walker naturally went to the 90s and most of mine were from the 70s. We didn’t decide to tackle these decades specifically, I guess it’s just naturally where we went (which is awesome). We’re both really proud of this mix. We’re hoping there are quite a few discoveries to be had (or for your love of some artists to be rekindled). It’s really incredible to see how previous music trends from 10/20/30 years ago are constantly recurring today. Florence + the Machine are currently toping the US/UK charts, but she’d be nowhere without Kate Bush. Lorelei’s The Bitter Air feels like the kind of music Beach House might make if they were creating music during the early 90s. Missy Elliott crafted one of her best and funkiest singles with a soul track by Ann Peebles.
There’s a certain charm, at least I find, to discovering older artists and older music, perhaps stemming from the same reason that blogs and music lovers adore old photography and footage. Nothing beats the feeling of finding an older gem in a vinyl shop. I hope you get that feeling while listening to this mixtape. Enjoy!
