David Thomas Broughton — Apologies

The men responsible for David Thomas Broughton not being universally beloved and showered with accolades should be brought before a council of elders and charged with crimes of humanity (or at least given a very stern talking-to). I mean, seriously— have you guys listened to The Complete Guide to Insufficiency? Like, really, really listened to it? If we’re being honest here, there’s hasn’t been an instance in which I’ve played “Unmarked Grave” and not felt the overwhelming urge to sob violently into a pillowcase. But I digress. Broughton’s latest is Outbreeding (out now on Brainlove), which trades his typical long-form songcraft for more digestible, easy-to-swallow nuggests. It’s still Broughton though, complete with all the doubt, desperation, and pitch-black comedy you could ask for. Tracks like “Apologies” find him at the height of his powers, weaving lush, delicate arrangements and dishing out creepy-but-endearing lines like “I tried all night to set your body on fire”. Outbreeding is yet another notch in the belt of a phenomenally talented songwriter— one that hopefully won’t go unnoticed this time around.
