Fourth of July: Friend of a Friend
For all the Arcade Fires and Animal Collectives out there, we need bands like Fourth of July. These guys may not be pushing any boundaries or making grand sociopolitical statements, but they go damn well with a beer and a smoke. Equal parts heartbreak and sing-along choruses, their ‘07 debut was a fun, earnest picture of getting wasted in the Kansas sun. Some of the more bleeding-heart numbers even recalled the short-lived golden age of Bright Eyes (you know, before he started wearing silly hats).
On “Friend of a Friend” (which opens with the crack of a can, no less), Fourth of July seem to be staggering along the same booze-soaked path; it’s not up to par with some of their older cuts (namely “Purple Heart”), but its talon-like hooks and lovesick lyrics are hard to say no to. Listen up, Conor: this is how Midwestern angst should sound.
